Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine

Align. Restore. Thrive.

What is a DO?

Doctors of Osteopathy are fully trained, licensed and Board Certified physicians who practice in all areas of Medicine using a whole-person, patient-centered approach to medicine, listening and partnering with their patients to achieve and maintain wellness.

The main difference in the training of DOs and MDs is that DOs complete an additional 200 hours of coursework, This extra training focuses on bones, muscles, and nerves and how they interconnect and affect the body's overall health.

What is the philosophy of Osteopathic Medicine?

  1. The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.

  2. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.

  3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.

  4. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.

What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment?

As part of a holistic approach to wellness, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) employs the interplay between the neuromusculoskeletal system and the body as a whole, with the objective of reinstating functionality and/or eliminating impediments to motion and healing. With its hands-on approach, OMT has the potential to assist in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of various medical conditions. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) use OMT to treat musculoskeletal pain and a wide range of health conditions.

Using several OMT techniques, DOs apply gentle pressure to manipulate the muscles, bones and joints. This treatment encourages the body to heal itself by ensuring that the bones and muscles are aligned and balanced.

Most insurance companies cover OMT.

Feel free to ask your insurance company if they cover OMT. The procedure code is 98929.

What are the benefits of OMT?

OMT is a hands-on treatment method that can be used to promote healing and improve the body's natural ability to function. It is commonly used to alleviate pain, improve range of motion, and promote overall wellness. OMT can be used to treat a wide range of medical conditions including:

  • musculoskeletal conditions: back pain, neck pain, joint pain, muscle tension, and headaches.

  • Respiratory problems: asthma, sinusitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

  • Digestive problems: constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

  • Circulatory problems: edema and lymphatic congestion.

  • Pregnancy-associated issues: pelvic girdle pain, low back pain, reduce stress and anxiety, ease labor and delivery.

OMT is not just for pain.

OMT helps the body move better, boosts circulation, and calms the nervous system.
